When I woke up today I was doing the same as every morning, checking my newsreader to see if there something interesting happended while I was asleep. And there was one headline that caught my attention for a second but not because it was interesting but because it pissed me of. It was one of those kind of click-bait headlines and not even a worthy one.
What was it? It was “Is Sapphire glass the next big thing on mobiles” or something like that. Honestly I didn’t care about enough to even check what site had posted it or what it was about, the title alone was enough for a faceplam.
C’mon, is anyone seriously considering something like glass to be a breakthrough in the industry? It doesn’t really do much on its own and I doubt it would be the reason for someone to buy or not to buy a mobile device. Sure, it protects your display from scratches and damage but it’s not like there aren’t other glass or plastic covers around for years. And it’s also not like Corning has stopped working on improving their gorilla glass now all of a sudden.
Maybe Sapphire is a really outstanding product, I’m not trying to say it isn’t but itself has some obvious flaws itself. It is more brittle and therefore more likely to shatter and crack than gorilla glass. The one big advantage is has for now is that it offers way better protection against scratches. But personally I would rather risk my display getting scratched than for it to break. And thinking back, none of my displays ever got an actual visible scratch nor did one break, and this is coming from someone who has seen his HTC One X fall flat on its face from slightly over 6 feet with no visible damage at all, nice job Corning. Thanks to your glass I saved quite some money back then.
So when I have to choose if I want better protection against a scratch or a crack, I would choose cracking. Because it is really hard to get a really visible scratch onto your mobile device that would actually hinder the usage these days, it is still fully functional, a cracked screen though, not so much.
So what I’m trying to say is, a good protected screen is important but definitely no deal breaker or game changer for anyone since the differences between Sapphire and Corning won’t be noticeable for the mainstream user in daily life anyways. By the time Sapphire will get widely adopted, Corning will most probably release their next iteration with even better durability on their own and the difference will get even smaller and even less noticeable.
So again, NO, Sapphire glass for sure WON’T be next big thing since it doesn’t really add anything to the table allowing you to use your mobile in a completely different way and the fact alone that Apple is planning on using it first on their next iPhone surely doesn’t make it any more special all of a sudden now, even if some people wanna make it seem like that. In the end all I can recommend you is to take better care of your mobile device because neither Corning nor Sapphire will be a life saver if the phone falls REALLY bad, there are limits to every sort of protection and sometimes not even the best is good enough.
So what are thoughts here? do you agree or disagree and which sort of protection is more important for you?
